Trudeau Announces Federal Wage Increase for Low-Income workers

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his government is providing $3 billion in order to increase the wages for low-income essential workers.
“Workers are risking their health to provide us with essential care and services, and we need to make sure that they are paid properly for the work they do every day,” Trudeau said.  The provinces/ territories are going to designate which workers are eligible.  The move is part of an ongoing economic package to individuals and businesses through the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Ontario list of essential service workers includes those who work in pharmacies, grocery stories, laundromats, as well as funeral and related services.  Ontario has announced it plans to begin reopening retail provided they have a storefront with a curbside pickup option.  “This measure will help workers critical to the current COVID-19 response get the compensation they need,” Finance Minister Bill Morneau said.
