Another milestone has been reached in the reimagining of Wallaceburg’s hospital.

That’s thanks to a $2.5 million capital planning grant from the Ontario government.

The money will be used to complete the planning and design process, meaning the project can go to the province for final approval as early as May.

In making the announcement, Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Steve Pinsonneault said it’s a project he wants to see through to the finish line.

“This additional $2.5 million grant does show Premier Ford and our government’s commitment to making sure health care is a priority,” Pinsonneault said from the podium. “This funding will help ensure the Wallaceburg emergency department, diagnostic imaging and the laboratory facilities are carefully planned and designed to meet the needs now and in the future.”

The MPP had words of praise for the people who fought to keep the hospital in Wallaceburg, noting “it all started” with the grassroots advocacy group S.O.S. (Save Our Sydenham).

Pinsonneault commended donors and groups such as the women in the Sydenham District Hospital Auxiliary for devoting their time and raising money for the project.

“I also want to recognize the incredible support from local residents who have rallied behind this project – your generosity and advocacy have helped make this progress possible,” he said. “Together we’re building a stronger future for health care in Wallaceburg.”

The capital planning grant brings the total provincial planning investment for the project to $3.5 million, building upon previous grants of $500,000 awarded in both 2019 and 2022.

The Wallaceburg redevelopment project features a 22,000 square foot addition to the existing building, which will house a new emergency department, diagnostic imaging, laboratory and an inpatient medicine unit.

CKHA president and CEO Adam Topp said the funding will consolidate all of the documents for submission in May.

“I know Steve is going to help push it along through government to get that final approval to go to tender,” Topp said. “Thank you for your help in achieving that.”

Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation leader Christine Mitchell acknowledged the importance of philanthropy, noting the foundation has received “transformational gifts” from the community, including legacy donations.
