For the first time, FreeHelpCK volunteers have hopped up to provide Easter food baskets for those in need.

That’s according to executive director Geri Hughson who spearheaded expanding the non-profit’s efforts to include a special gift from the Easter Bunny.

“We will be doing this every year from now on,” Hughson told The Voice, adding that 125 Easter food baskets were distributed to local residents this year. Plus, more than 100 people were treated to a hot dinner on Monday.

But just as critical, said Hughson, is being able to chat with folks during the visit.

“To be able to check in with people and talk, asking them if they took their medication and things is just as important,” Hughson said. “A lot of people are lonely and this is a great way to connect with them.”

Crystal Jinco, recipient of one of the baskets, said it means her family will be able to celebrate with an Easter dinner.

“Times are tough,” Jinco explained. “Taxes went up today, nobody can afford anything.”

Aimed at providing food for those aged 65 years and up, FreeHelpCK cooks and delivers 225 hot meals a week, totalling 1,491 meals in the month of March.

Hughson said the meals are made possible through the generosity of many donors and volunteers.
