The Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission (CK PUC) is pleased to announce that the Wheatley Water Treatment Plant has been fully rehabilitated following the fire that took place in September 2023.
Through the hard work of PUC staff and local contractors, plant operations are now fully back online and the plant is once again supplying safe, high-quality drinking water to residents in Wheatley and Tilbury. Throughout the repair process, many components of the plant have been replaced with the newest available technology to ensure longevity and reliable production for years to come.
The restoration marks the end of a challenging period for the community. Following the 2023 blaze, the PUC operated a temporary water treatment system in Wheatley and implemented outdoor water restrictions to manage supply. Despite the strain on the system, officials consistently assured residents that drinking water quality remained safe and that all provincial treatment, disinfection and monitoring standards were met. Restrictions were gradually lifted in May, though voluntary lawn watering limits remained in place. Contingency plans—including access to water from Blenheim, Leamington and Chatham—were prepared in case the rebuild faced delays.
“This achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of our staff, contractors and partners who worked tirelessly to restore the facility and ensure uninterrupted service to the community,” said Karen Burgess, Director of Operations, PUC.
“I would like to thank the PUC staff for their diligence and commitment to Wheatley,” said Councillor Lauren Anderson. “I would like to further extend my gratitude to Leamington for keeping our water flowing during our time of need. Partnerships like ours are imperative to continuing to provide the needs of our communities. Finally, to the people of Wheatley and our major water users, your patience and accommodations to requests from the PUC did not go unnoticed and your support has made all the difference.”
The Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission remains committed to maintaining reliable water services and safeguarding public health through continuous investment in infrastructure and operational excellence.
