Tilbury Residents Push for Bus Stop on Windsor–Toronto Route Amid Rising Travel Costs

Community members in Tilbury and surrounding areas are calling on intercity bus companies to add a stop in their town along the Windsor-to-Toronto route, citing convenience, affordability and accessibility concerns.

Currently, passengers travelling between Windsor and Toronto must board buses in either Windsor or Chatham, leaving Tilbury residents with few options. Many say they are forced to rely on costly train trips or rideshare apps, which can be inconvenient and unpredictable.

For students like Fatima Khalid, who frequently visits her family in Comber while studying in Toronto, the lack of a Tilbury stop adds unnecessary hurdles.

“Every time I come to visit my mom, I have to arrange extra rides from Windsor or Chatham,” Khalid said.

“It’s expensive and stressful. A Tilbury stop would make life so much easier for students like me.”

Others who commute regularly for work or family obligations share similar frustrations. José Rodríguez, who travels to London for business, said the absence of a local stop forces him to spend more time and money.

“I end up paying for rideshares or driving long distances just to catch a bus,” Rodríguez said.

“Tilbury is right along the route — it makes sense to stop here.”

For David Brown, who visits Toronto often for family events, the issue is about fairness and accessibility.

“We’re a growing community, and people here deserve the same access to affordable travel as larger cities,” Brown said.

“Adding a stop in Tilbury would help seniors, students and families who can’t always drive.”

Residents argue that Tilbury’s location along Highway 401 makes it an ideal stop for major carriers like Megabus or FlixBus.

Advocates say a designated pickup point could serve not only Tilbury but also nearby communities such as Comber and Wheatley, reducing reliance on costly alternatives.

Community members suggest the Onroute service centre near Tilbury as a convenient option for pick-ups and drop-offs. Located directly off Highway 401, Onroute facilities offer safe parking, restrooms and food services, making them an ideal choice for intercity bus stops without requiring significant infrastructure changes.

Currently, VIA Rail service is available from Chatham or Windsor, but tickets can be expensive and schedules limited. Rideshare apps are often used to bridge the gap, but costs can quickly add up, especially for frequent travellers.

Local leaders and community groups are expected to raise the issue with transportation providers in the coming weeks. Supporters hope that adding a Tilbury stop will improve regional connectivity and ease financial strain for residents.
