A long-serving principal with the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB), Erin Van De Wiele, has reached a significant milestone by earning a Doctorate in Education with a focus on Educational Leadership from Western University.

Van De Wiele’s academic and professional journey reflects a deep commitment to education. She began her studies with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Animal Biology and a Master of Science in Livestock Nutrition from the University of Guelph. She later obtained a Bachelor of Education from the University of Windsor.

Before entering K-12 education, Van De Wiele spent two years as a professor at Ridgetown College. She then transitioned to elementary education, teaching for five years before moving into school administration. Her diverse academic and professional experiences have shaped her approach to meeting the evolving learning needs of students.

Erin has held various leadership roles with the LKDSB, serving as a Vice Principal at Tecumseh Public School and Tilbury Area Public School and as a Principal for 14 years at several LKDSB schools, including Thamesville Area Central School, Victor Lauriston Public School, McNaughton Ave Public School, Lambton Kent Virtual Elementary School, and currently Naahii Ridge Public School.

Erin’s motivation to better understand and serve students and families impacted by trauma emerged during her early years as a principal. Her dedication to fostering a supportive learning environment has influenced her leadership style and personal life. Through her doctoral research, which focused on balancing the equation by implementing trauma-informed practices for equity in student achievement, Erin emphasized the importance of addressing students’ fundamental needs before engaging with higher-order learning.

Erin also actively contributes to the professional development of her fellow educators to enhance leadership capacity and advocacy for equity-deserving students and families throughout the province, particularly through her involvement in the Ontario Principals’ Council additional qualifications program.

Completing her doctorate while fulfilling the roles of a school Principal and a virtual learning Principal over the past three years presented its own challenges. Erin credits her success to the unwavering support, understanding and guidance from her LKDSB colleagues, educators, and school community. She also expresses profound gratitude to her family, whose love and encouragement were invaluable throughout this journey.

Erin’s commitment to education and her passion for equity in student achievement exemplify the qualities of an exceptional leader. As she continues to champion trauma-informed practices, her work will undoubtedly resonate throughout the LKDSB and beyond, fostering a more inclusive and supportive educational landscape for all students.
