Celebrating Local Entrepreneurs in Tilbury’s Small Business Scene

Nestled between Windsor and Chatham, Tilbury may seem quiet, but it’s a thriving hub for small businesses. In celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week last month, we’re shining a spotlight on some of the local entrepreneurs and small businesses in Tilbury. From gift shops to electronic repairs, Tilbury is home to a growing number of small businesses that play a crucial role in keeping the town vibrant.

For more than 25 years, Kara’s Rose Garden has been a cornerstone of Tilbury’s local business scene. Purchased in 2009 by Amy and Joe Cartier, the couple opted to keep the name because of its great reputation. Known for its variety of fresh flowers, plants, and creative gift ideas, Kara’s Rose Garden is a go-to spot for every occasion.

For Amy, the most rewarding part of owning a small business in Tilbury is her customers. “I have made some great friends through this business,” she says. “I have laughed and cried with many of them. I love that they can count on me in their happy and sad times.”

Computer Intervention is another local business ready to take care of all your computer needs. Owner Dan has always had a passion for computers. “I’ve always liked computers and working on them,” he explains. “I originally did computer programming, but I found I liked being more hands-on with the machines and fixing them, so I ended up going that way.” About 16 years ago, Dan was on a short-term assignment at the new No Frills in Tilbury. “As I talked and met with the local folk, I fell in love with the town and the people,” Dan recalls. At the same time, he noticed the town didn’t have any computer business and considered starting one.

Bricks and Blooms, another cornerstone of Tilbury’s small business community, is a full-service florist located on Main Street, specializing in fresh flowers, unique gifts, and home décor. Owner Jessica, who grew up in nearby Comber and attended high school in Tilbury, values the town’s close-knit community and historic appeal. Jessica always knew she wanted to build a career around her creativity, and opening Bricks and Blooms has given her the perfect opportunity to do so. “Many of the buildings on Queen Street, including ours, have so much history and character,” Jessica says. “We wanted to bring some of that charm back to the downtown area.”

All three businesses, like many other Tilbury entrepreneurs, are deeply committed to supporting their community. Bricks and Blooms contributes to local events such as the Tilbury Figure Skating Carnival, the Randy Atkinson Memorial Golf Tournament, and the Tilbury Light Festival, among others. Similarly, Kara’s Rose Garden gives back by donating to causes like the Tilbury Lions, the Memorial Light Festival, the Tilbury Night Market, and the Chatham-Kent Hospice. Dan from Computer Intervention also plays an important role in the community by contributing to raffles and organizing dinners for those in need. “With the help of others, we put on dinners for those in need, moved furniture, and just been a listening ear for those that might want to chat and be social,” Dan says. He credits his friend Todd Beselaere, also known as ‘Bezzy’ at Tilbury Rentals, for teaching him the value of listening.

The impact of shopping local cannot be overstated. Every purchase made at a small business in Tilbury helps keep money within the community and supports the entrepreneurs dedicated to its success. By choosing to shop at local stores like Kara’s Rose Garden, Computer Intervention, and Bricks and Blooms, you’re not just getting a unique product or service – you’re investing in the town’s future.

“When you shop with a small business, 66 cents of every dollar stays local compared to only 11 cents when you spend at a big box store,” Amy says. “That is great for the community!”

This holiday season, let’s celebrate the small businesses that make Tilbury so special. Whether you’re picking up a bouquet of fresh flowers, finding the perfect gift, or enjoying the personal service only a local shop can provide, remember that shopping local has far-reaching benefits for the entire community.
