C-K Police Blotter: Arson, assault, and break-ins highlight busy week for police

Chatham-Kent police responded to various incidents, including arrests for arson, assaulting a police officer, and obstructing justice. Other arrests involved public intoxication, probation violations, and outstanding warrants. Police also investigated two break-and-enters—one at a business and another at a residential garage.

Woman Arrested for Obstructing Police

Police conducted a traffic stop on Wallace Street in Wallaceburg. During the stop, the woman provided a false name. After confirming her identity, the officer discovered she was wanted on outstanding warrants held by Chatham-Kent police and Windsor police.

The 46-year-old Wallaceburg woman was arrested and released to Windsor police with a future court date. She is facing charges of theft, possession of stolen property, and obstructing police.

Man Arrested for Arson

Police responded to a disturbance on Taylor Avenue in Chatham. Upon arrival, officers learned that the front of the residence was on fire, and the suspect, known to the occupants, was seen holding a fuel can nearby.

Burn marks were observed on the residence, and the suspect fled the area. The 45-year-old Chatham man was later arrested and charged with arson—endangering life and arson—damage to property. He was held pending a bail hearing.

Residential Break and Enter

Chatham-Kent police received a report of a residential break-in in the Taylor Avenue area in Chatham, which occurred over a five-day period. Unknown suspect(s) entered a detached garage on the property. The exact items taken remain unknown, and the investigation is ongoing.

Man Arrested for Causing Harm

At approximately 10 a.m., a 53-year-old Chatham man was arrested in connection with an assault investigation dating back to June. He was transported to Chatham-Kent police headquarters and later released with conditions. He has a future court date set for Oct. 21, 2024.

Commercial Break and Enter

During a general patrol, police observed that the front window of a commercial business on King Street West, Chatham, had been smashed. Officers found the cash drawer nearby.

After clearing the interior, police confirmed that only the cash drawer was missing. The estimated damage and loss amounted to approximately $1,100. The investigation is ongoing.

Man Charged with Assaulting a Police Officer

A 41-year-old Chatham man was arrested on outstanding warrants for failing to attend court and breaching probation. While in custody, he caused damage to the cell block area after being informed he would be released on bail. He then spat on an officer and was subsequently charged with mischief and assaulting a police officer. He remains in custody pending a new bail hearing.

Man Arrested for Public Intoxication

Shortly after 10 p.m., police arrested a 24-year-old man for public intoxication in the area of King Street West, Chatham. He was lodged until sober.

Man Arrested for Probation Violation

A warrant was issued for a man after he failed to appear in court, breaching his probation order. On Sept. 19, 2024, at 1:39 p.m., the man turned himself in at Chatham-Kent police headquarters. The 26-year-old Wallaceburg man was arrested and released with a court date of Oct. 21, 2024.

Man Arrested on Outstanding Warrants

At 9:09 p.m., police responded to Park Avenue West in Chatham for safety concerns. Upon arrival, a man fled the scene, but after a short foot chase, he was taken into custody. The 28-year-old Ontario man was wanted on several warrants related to intimate partner violence by Sarnia and Woodstock police. He was arrested and released to the Sarnia Police Service.
